Grape seed oil and the wine production chain: technical solutions and market opportunities
Results of the Uva Pretiosa project
The production of grape seeds oil represents an interesting opportunity for wine companies: technical evaluations and economic analysis in showing how the operation has its practicability and convenience show, however, some problems.
Under the economic point of view, the first problem to be faced is about the sizing of the production process, by pushing the production volume to levels that can have an adequate reduction of the unit costs of production without however going to the quantities that can be imagined to be able to place on a market that is still a niche one. The potentialities of the market are remarkable but certainly not easy to catch: the difficulties of penetration are high, and companies must act on the commercial levers of communication and distribution with a not indifferent incisiveness, having to engage in operational areas which, at least in the field of cosmetics, are completely foreign to the usual channels in which the wine industry moves.
And it is in the field of products dedicated to personal care that the greatest opportunities for the valorization of grape seed oil should be identified, not only for the greater margins that the cosmetics sector offers, but also to avoid a direct comparison that would be created with extra virgin olive oil that in the collective imagination is universally associated with the Tuscan production context.
